MANSFIELD, PA—Teams from North Penn-Mansfield, Loyalsock, Williamsport, and Northeast Bradford High Schools participated in a regional round of the Pennsylvania Governor’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Competition, hosted by the Mansfield University Education and Special Education Department, on Thursday, February 2.
BLaST IU17 coordinated the contest, which had the theme “Making Our Lives Better Through STEM.”
The teams were challenged to research, present and design a device/project that is capable of making the quality of life better for citizens of Pennsylvania. The students demonstrated their projects to a panel of judges and also submitted a written project plan.
Once all of the projects were presented, the teams were given a box of materials and 30 minutes to complete a set of tasks. This activity was known as the “project in a box.”

from Northeast Bradford advanced to the statewide STEM competition.
Michele Whitecraft, MU assistant professor of Education and Special Education, served as a judge, along with Steve Stone, president of Primus Technologies, and Amanda Smith, STEM Outreach and Engagement liaison for the Center for Science and the Schools at Penn State University.
Nanci Werner-Burke, professor of Education and Special Education, served as the site coordinator. Students from Whitecraft and Werner-Burke’s classes were on hand to observe the competition.
